Filo Sofi Arts spotlights Dindga McCannon
Disclosures Through Dialogue Episode 3On Wednesday, December 9, 2020 we filmed our third installment of Disclosures Through Dialogue with mixed media artist Dindga McCannon. The revolutionary painter, sculptor, and mixed media artist explored her work in conversation with curator Kourosh Mahboubian, philosopher Donovan Irven, and gallery owner Gabrielle Aruta. Dindga McCannon's work was central to cultivating the second Harlem Renaissance in the 1960s and -70s. Her early work influenced a generation of artists to adapt alternative media into their paintings and championed the use of crafts such as quilting in fine art. A founding member of the Weusi Artist Collective and “Where We At” Black Women Artists Inc., she is a pioneering voice for marginalized people seeking recognition in the art world. McCannon’s work uses brightly colored acrylics combined with found items like antique jewelry and expert textile work to depict the people, places, and movements of which she has been a part. She remains an important chronicler of Black life in America
