Work on this piece began during the Australian brush fires that ravaged eastern Australia beginning June of 2019. The glow on the horizon subtly alludes to these origins, as the Kookaburra looks back with a knowing, defiant eye. The proportions of the bird have been modified to create a reimagined creature with a tail of textile-like qualities. The play of light in the sky is suggestive of a time-lapse, as if the bird has been perched here as night passes into day. Just as the light is captured here in its temporal dynamism, the landscape also evokes diasporic (spread out) mastery with imagined cherry blossom flowers capturing the light from Japan, a nod to Mt. Pedernal in New Mexico, brought together in the Australian brush.
