Dogs shaking a mandala of cascading water from their coats is an established image in Scott’s oeuvre. Sometime in 2006 or 2007, the street artist Banksy painted an image of a shaking dog on a wall in the West Bank of Gaza. This image has set off a firestorm in the art world – both involving questions of artistic merit and the socio-political context of Gaza and its relation to the art world. This painting touches on those stark contrasts and reversals through its sensitive manipulation of the image by reversing it and inverting the color scheme. These variations elevate a work in dialogue with the greater community of artists about their role and significance in society. A part of the long tradition of visual referencing, this piece places Iris Scott in dialogue with themes that are transforming the art world today.
