A bright figure is engaged by her smartphone in a desolated foreground suggestive of a private lot. While greens roll away into the background, the lot blends into brown with graffiti highlights as it approaches the viewer. The scene cuts against the easy naturalism of conventional landscape painting by not only showing nature to be defaced, but by directing its subject’s attention away from the landscape itself and into the digital window of the phone. The question is posed, “why do we look at the landscape?”
