This painting is a composite image that brings together two birds originally photographed separately by Peggy Burnet while on a photo-safari in India. While safaris are often associated with big game hunting, the idea of “shooting” animals takes on a transformative quality when the act is that of photography. Preserving the live animal in their environment while creating a keepsake “trophy,” the photo safari provides an opportunity to transform trauma into art. Scott has worked transformative magic on these images, lovingly importing jewel tones into a setting originally saturated in browns, thus transfiguring the environment of these birds into a world made of their colors.
